D15, HW#1, Final WP#1/Revision

Writing project # 1 was the first writing assignment we were given. In this project I began to research my chosen topic. I had trouble understanding the rhetorical situation. The suggested readings given were helpful in answering my questions. The peer reviews and instructor's advice helped me to revise my paper. I was able to narrow my audience. This helped me to achieve outcome number two--organizing my writing to support a central idea and writing to a specific context. This writing helped me grow as a student writer because I was able to include my personal experience and research activities.

Universal Healthcare

Why doesn’t the United States of America have universal healthcare? Not everyone in America today has health insurance. I chose this topic for the fact that many families go without coverage and are forced to pay out of pocket for medical care. Millions cannot afford to be seen by medical staff because of the mere fact that they are in poverty. Doctors will not accept people in need of emergency care if they do not have proof of insurance. So then families, especially kids are turn away from receiving medical attention.


My research will focus on blue collar families who work hard to provide a living for themselves, but still can't afford to have medical insurance and to receive health care when needed. I see it firsthand in my own family and co-workers I have talked to. The rise in cost to have medical insurance is expensive; it makes it hard for low income families to afford coverage for themselves.


I feel my purpose in writing this paper is to write to congress to raise awareness of the needs of those whose needs are not being met. There are many situations where doctors do see you even when you don’t have coverage, but then you are left with a high monthly medical bill. That has happened to me, as I need to have medical attention but did not have health coverage. I had to pay with a credit card which left me with a high credit bill to pay. That brings me back to why doesn’t the United States have universal healthcare. I have been working contract jobs in the last year. These contract companies do not provide insurance for temporary workers with health care benefits. So I am forced to go with out coverage because of the low wages, I can not afford the high cost of having insurance. I do hope to accomplish my research paper for others to see the need of health insurance for America.

My audience will be the politicians who decide who can be covered. I will try to seek both sides of the topic question and find answers to each argument.

The attended audience will need hard facts on why there should be universal coverage. Maybe with good research, I can get their interest to write or talk to others about getting universal coverage for everyone. I found a lot of interesting information on this particular subject. I will need to examine the sources and use material that is pertinent to my research question.

As I write my paper I find it hard to concentrate on the one question because of the many sub-topics of this subject has to cover. I feel encouraged that I will gain much knowledge when my research is done.

In writing project No. 2, I had to push to get the paper in on time before the due date. That was one of my obstacle's this semester. I had to fight the time in doing my work on every project. I believe in some of the chapter readings there was talk on how to use time wisely in gathering and organizing your materials for writing. I think in the course outcome,I needed to work on No. 2 and 4 for this project.
I felt I did a good job in outcome #6, using appropiate documentation and maintaining academic integrity. The APA examples in the Wadsworth Handbook were very helpful.

Annotated Bibliography

I will be researching the topic of why should everyone in America have health insurance. There are many families in America who are not covered by health insurance. Some reasons why individuals do not have coverage are because they can’t afford it or their employer does not provide benefits for them and simply the government does not issue health insurance to everyone for reasons of their own. Families with kids in particular who need emergency care are not being cared for properly for the fact that they do not have the proper coverage to pay the high cost of medical bills they encounter. A mere doctor’s visit will cost an arm and a leg if they are not covered by health insurance. Many families are forced to pay out of pocket to be cared for by medical staff. America has had this problem for many years and it also seems to come up during presidential elections. Politicians use health insurance to better their chance of being elected and then drop it down on their list when elected. I also have gone through not having insurance for my family and have friends who themselves can not afford the high cost of health insurance. If we can provide millions to fight wars, we should be able to give health care to everyone who can not afford to have good health care for their families.

This book I found through ebrary. The author gave detailed examples of how our uninsured families are suffering through the system. It has statistics from the governments. There are also quotes from family member’s struggle not having health care. That will be a good way of giving some examples in my paper.

I found this book to be of great information with lots of graphs and statistics. It list many ways on how America can help cover the uninsured in this country. This book will be of great source for my paper because of the many example it list and where to go for answers.

I think it was useful, because it talked about how America's children are without health care and how parents are forced to pay high medical bills to see a doctor. I'm not sure on the credibility of this source, but the author is well known in her field.

Writing project No.3 was challenging and time intense. I did not put the right amount of extensive research on this paper as I should of. The topic chosen for this draft had an enormous complex mix of information. I wish I could of found a subject less complicated. I felt I did a good job with my biliographies in finding the data needed to complete the paper.
If I would write this paper over, I would improve my argument better. I would also try targetting my audience to whom I wanted to get me points across. I went a little off focus when talking to them in some areas. The peer and instructor suggestions were of great help. I used most of the ideas given in revising my work on finding data to argue my point and to seek who I was my main audience.

Universal Health Care


Health insurance seems to be a topic often talked about whenever presidential elections come around. They put insurance coverage in the forefront of every debate. I like when some candidates say how they would try to have universal health care when elected to office. You know as well as I do they are only saying it to get into the White House. So why doesn’t the United States of America have universal health care for everyone is something we need to examined as hardworking citizens and tax payers. Congress needs to pass a law which gives every person in the United States health insurance no matter what race, age, or financial bracket they are in. I used to be one of many hard working individuals who could not afford health insurance for my family. I think this country should have universal health care because families can’t pay the high cost of premiums with a minimum wage salary and also some employers don’t cover their employees. I see families who are homeless with children and I wonder if they have insurance in case of an emergency. Would they be given the same care of one who has insurance? I feel we need to have coverage for every American individual for those particular situations.
One reason we should have universal health coverage is cost. As insurance premiums continue to rise, families are being forced to pay out of pocket for medical care, which can be a financial burden. Many find themselves using credit cards to pay for needed surgeries or outpatient care. That leads to high monthly credit bills that take years to pay off. I became a victim of using a credit card to pay for medical services. I had a contract job which did not have any sort of medical benefits nor dental. I visited the emergency room one day and before they could see me I needed to show some proof of insurance. I did not have any, so I had to make a pre-payment with my credit card. I am thankful to say, I have paid that bill off. I have another experience with the dentist, but I will spare you the details. I have heard from co-workers who have no insurance how they faced similar situations as I did. Many of them don’t take their children or themselves to see a doctor for preventive care. They don’t seek medical care unless it is an emergency because it can be too expensive to afford.
Cost is also an issue for critics who are against universal healthcare because they say it will cost the government too much money. There are Republicans who say “that in belt-tightening times — and when so much money is being diverted to fight terrorism — benefits should go to those who need them most. They point out that Medicare beneficiaries who can afford it already pay for supplemental coverage, some of which covers prescriptions. Providing free drugs for all seniors could “bankrupt the program,” hurting all Medicare beneficiaries, according to a GOP “Talking Points” memo prepared for House members (CQ 2002). Critics are also saying covering everyone in America is impossible. Some questions which they say need to be answered are:” how much will it cost? Who will pay? Should it be public or private insurance? Should employers or workers be subsidized? Should subsidies be provided through tax credits or vouchers?” Politicians should be able to come to an agreement on how the government can pay for such an important issue of health insurance. While these are obviously important policy questions, the emphasis on costs remain the big issue. But not paying for individuals health plans will be a major cost. If we don’t pay for preventive care now it will cost government more because they will have to pay the hospitals and doctors for treating those who have become seriously ill due to a lack of regular care.
Polls have studied how people feel the government can pay for these services.

According to a Kaiser Family Foundation poll in April 2005, the following options were chosen by Americans as the single best method of increasing healthcare coverage in the United States:
· Tax credits for businesses
· Expand state government programs like Medicaid
· Tax credits for uninsured individuals
· Expand Medicare to people ages 55-64
· Require businesses to offer employees insurance
· A national health plan, financed by taxpayers (Chua, K.P., Fellow, J. R. 2005-2006)
As you can see, there are ways of funding health insurance for all citizens in the United States.
The United States can not continue to let children go without health insurance. Children need to have insurance so doctors can perform preventive care so that later in life they are not forced to have any major surgery or serious ailments. Children should have the right to seek medical attention without being turned away because parents can’t show proof of insurance or don’t have credit cards to pay for services. One example of why children need coverage is the case of Dalton Dawes, from North Carolina.
Dalton Dawes and a classmate bumped into each other while playing on the swing set. Dalton Dawes parents' worst nightmare began that day. Dalton is a hemophiliac, and he began to bleed internally. Dalton had been receiving twice-weekly injections of a blood-clotting agent almost since birth. Now he would need them more often. The drug would do more than simply allow him to live a normal child's life, playing soccer and roaming the nearby woods. It would keep him from bleeding to death. Yet the family's health insurer would not provide coverage. Nor could his parents, despite their good jobs, afford the $2,000 weekly expense — for years to come. So Leonard Poe, a lawyer, and Heather Dawes, a paralegal, impoverished themselves. They sold off land and built a home from logs. They dispensed with the dishwasher and TV. By reducing their earnings to less than $23,000 a year, they qualified for Medicaid, the government health-insurance program for the poor. After Dalton's seventh birthday, his parents had to cut their income even further — to $15,492 — in order to remain eligible for Medicaid. Instead, they tried to enroll him in the Children's Health Insurance Initiative (CHIP). There many cases like this one where families are driven away from medical help and are force to make changes in their life style because the government makes it hard for someone to qualify for medical attention”. These parents, despite their good jobs, still can’t afford the treatment for their son. Because jobs don’t offer insurance to working families we are faced with poverty to qualify for healthcare.
In conclusion, I feel that America should have universal coverage because our family’s health and social needs depend on government help. We can not become another third world country where we are not able to help our own people from dying because of the lack of preventive medical assistance. The skyrocketing of insurance premiums and the low pay of minimum wage jobs with no employer benefits makes it stressful for working class citizens able to afford coverage for their loved ones. I suggest to all readers to go out and see “"Sicko," by the filmmaker, Michael Moore, which is a documentary on universal health care.

Reflective Cover Letter

As I registered for English 102 this summer I had no idea what I was getting into and what work would be involved. When I started reading the course outline and syllabus, I began to feel nervous because of all the writing that was expected of us during the 5 weeks. Though I am not a good writer, I was up for the challenge. The course outcomes were outlined so that you had no trouble losing site of what you were supposed to accomplish throughout the weeks. If only I followed them with more discipline maybe I wouldn’t of struggled as much in completing my work on time.
Writing project #1 was a good start in preparing you for the long task of writing your first draft. The rhetorical situation was somewhat confusing to understand in the beginning. I visited the rhetorical website and that brought some insight to the context. I felt I did use the 5 elements that make up the rhetorical situation in WP#3. The topic, audience, context, author and purpose seemed to make the draft come together.
For number #2 of the course outcome, I used the Wadsworth Handbook (pg. 103-104) to organize my thesis topic ideas. I learned to do free writing as well as clustering which allowed me to get my thoughts in order. Also used peer reviews to get added information where I needed to explain or add more info to my specific writing.
In Writing Project #3, I was able to achieve outcomes No. 3, 4. I did quite a bit of web browsing for this assignment and evaluating of the site was time consuming. Most of the sites I visited were very full of useful information for my topic and some just repeated data from other sites. Also the grammar exercises in the Wadsworth helped me correct my pronunciations and I was able to revise sentences that needed commas and proper quotes in them. Outcomes No.5, integrating through summarizing, paraphrasing and quotation was accomplished in WP#2, by doing an annotated bibliography outline. I think outcome #6 was also linked to this bibliography. I became more familiar with APA style when doing my work citations and quoting others work into my paper.
I enjoyed the peer reviews. Outcome No.7 and 8, using feedback from others and assessing one’s own writing strength were put into action in my reading reflections and peer reflections. They had great inputs and helpful hints to find other types of resources which had activities to revise a draft.
Course competency #9 was interesting. I’ve learned new technologies in becoming a better writer through the different tools given to us by the instructor. GMAIL, Gliffy, Docs, Blogs, Delicious, and others were instrumental to our writing process.
Despite all the work for this on-line course, I had a great learning experience by using all the different resources in my grasp. I have become more aware of my weaknesses and also my strengths through all the writings and readings. I hope to continue writing so that I will not lose the information I gained in this class.

As I reflect back on peer reviews, in reading others work I can see that my classmates have grown in thier writings. Thier outlines and course objectives were very well planned. Some of my peers even went beyond my expectations when writing about thier chosen topic.I felt my work was incomplete in some areas by the reviews I recieved. I did however, used the resources from the Wadsworth and chapter(www.box.net/shared) readings when doing writing assignments. These elements were very essential in my course outcome. I do hope to continue writing and improving my skills through future writing projects.

Looking back at my reflections I notice how much writing I've done in 5 weeks. I was surprized of how much I have learned in such a short time. I felt my grammar has improved and punctuation has gotten better. Through the many activities and readings given, I have become familiar with the process on producing a well informed thesis. Organizing and evaluating my resources has become better through using the delicious software. I was able to bookmark my findings and that allowed for quicker responses to my topic question. I know my work still needs improving, by my work habits. I will keep the helpful websites, such as the Purdue Owl, the chapter readings and theWadsworth Handbook ready at all times when doing another project like this one.

WP#3 assignment was a chore. It took me allot of hours to complete and I feel I still needed work to do on it. I did not follow the outline to the fullest. I did not organize my information properly and I lost focus of my audience at times. I tried to read the writing project several times, but ended up falling behind on my other assignments.
I felt I needed to spend more time free writing and doing some activities that were in the chapter readings. My topic research was to wide and full of to many sites with the same information. I needed to make my question to my topic more easier to argue.
My proudest moment was when I finished my conclusion. I felt a sense of accomplishment. My concerns was If I quoted my sources well enough that It showed where the original saying came from. I would hopefully try to read more on how to quote my sources from the different helpful websites.
My reports on turnitin were not as good as I wanted. They showed me that I needed to pay more attention to how I was wording my work. I also should of added some more arguments and rebuttals. I did some revising,but ran out of time to complete my final deadline.
My writing seems to be improving since I started taking these college English courses. Eng102 was a challenge. I think I met most of my course competencies by answering all of the specific outlines given. Finding the rhetorical situation gave me some problems,but I think I did o.k.
I have learned to organize my research data by using the programs given and learned to evaluate my resources more carefully.
I will need to learn on how to follow directions with better understanding on where to find help when writing a thesis or draft. Knowing what is expected of each step in your outline makes it easier to format you r paper. It was a good learning experience for me and I hope to continue to write more in my spare time.

Part 6 in the Wadsworth Handbook had lost of new and old information. It was a refresher course on how to use correct spelling. I learned how to use a dictionary better than before. I would never look at the word etymology til now. The exercises were very helpful. I always have trouble with the ie/ei combination, so ex.35.1 was a good test for me. On pg.319, it talked about how to use correct italics for titles and names. I used italics for my draft by setting a quote from an article apart from the other info.

This weeks assignments helped in putting my thesis in proper outline to my work assignment. I was able to used all of the helpful planned revisions. I became more aware of how to revise and look for better ways of showing my argument. I also read some peer drafts and they were very well researched.

My draft changed dramaticly because I added better points and took out unnecessary ones.

D10, HW#8, Deadline Reflection

I learned quite alot this week. One important reflection that stands outr the most is getting my work done on time. I have not been able to keep up with the work and felt overwhelm with trying to deal with outside situations along with doing homework. I did take in in valuable information on writing an argument and using correct pronounciations.

D10, HW#7, Grammar

Commas are ones I have trouble using when writing sentences. On pg. 255 and 266 in the Wadsworth handbook, it tells how to use them correctly with a coordinating conjunction. I did ex. 30.1 and also visited the Purdue Owl website. I visited this website on guidelines for using commas:https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/607/01/
Using Quotation marks also gives me some trouble. It seems to be an easy to use pronounciation, but sometimes it can be a problem when citing an article. I did do good on exercise 33.1 though. I found this website,http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_quote.html, in the Purdue Owl link to be a good source for learning about quotation marks.

Reading these two particular pronounciations helped me understand how to correctly use them when writing papers and when sending e-mails to others. i added quotation marks to one of my work cited paragraphs. The commas are being used a little better now that I read some of the examples in the Wadsworth handbook.

D10, HW# 6, Transitions in Wadsworth

"For example" sounds like an easy argument to put into my paper. It will allow me to find an article with examples of situations where families without insurance are treated.
For my refutation, I used "despite" a couple of times. It helped to start a new paragraph and to keep the argument going.
And of course,I used "in conclusion" to end my draft.

I did not turn in my WP#3 in time so I had already had quotes in my paper. I also had citations in my work.

D10, HW#1 Reading Reflection

Chapter 5 is about writing paragraphs. As stated on page 62, paragraphs must be unified. This can be achieved by using topic sentences and testing for unity. Paragraphs must also be coherent, showing the logical relationship between sentences. Strategies for accomplishing this are listed on page 65 and the following pages, including arranging details in chronological, logical, or spatial order. I will try using logical order in my paper because it is about health care. This chapter also offers to add coherence with suggestions on using transitional words and phrases, using pronouns, using parallel structure, and repeating key words and phrases. Paragraphs must also be well-developed, including enough details to make or prove a point. Introductory, transitional, and concluding paragraphs are special kinds of paragraphs, and pages 80-82 offer suggestions that helped me to write my introductory paragraph.
Chapter 7 brought out some interesting ideas on how to plan an argument. My wife is good at that. I found pg. 98 valuable. It got me started in thinking about my topic and how to go about debating it with for my audience. Also I will need to find good evidence so that my audience can be interested and not lose the focus of me research topic. Pg. 103 gave an example of how to put a thesis into a well argumentative form.

1) Addressing your audience wants
I chose this one because I do not have one particular audience, but I am targeting the politicians in government. I will find data that will impact that audience and see if other readers,like the working class, can benefit through it.

2) Developing Evaluation Criteria
I will incorporate the questions on pg. 7 to my reseacrch paper. I think that can be less stressful other than trying to sit here and think of things to write.

3)Evaluating Types of Resources
The activity was helpful in evaluting my resourches. I chose to evaluate the U.S. Census Bureau because of the enormous information it covers.

4)Clustering
I really enjoy using this activity. I tried it out on my computer by going to the Microsoft word tool. Gliffy was also interesting. It had flow charts and floor plans which you could use to plug in your thoughts into a flow chart..

This article I found by doing a Google search on "universal coverage". The information was from a group of medical students whom organization is called The American Medical Student Association. They are involved in the concerns of physicians in training. They are working towards improving medical training and health care. The information I read in this article has lots of data to support my research paper and has graphs with data that shows how many uninsured people and those who cant afford coverage.

D9, HW#1, Reading Reflection

The reading on the Wadsworth handbook was helpful in identifying where I will need work on supporting my thesis. On pg. 27,3a, it gave a good example of how your thesis paper should be developed. Pg. 28, 3b, had some interesting information on how to make your thesis statement more effective which will help my opening paragraph.
Chapter 8 readings were useful to my work, especially the questions on each topic. They help you get your thoughts written on paper, so that allows you to gather information and it makes writing your paper easier. I used the techno tip to find different clustering sites, such as the one given, (http://www.gliffy.com/). It had lots of diagrams and flow charts for your use when help needed.
